What is Copy AI?
To understand Copy AI, we first need to discuss GPT-3 by OpenAI. Initially released June 11, 2020, the Generative Pre-trained Transformer 3 (GPT-3) uses deep learning to produce auto-generated text, images, and even code. With a capacity of over 175 billion machine learning parameters, GPT-3 has easily surpassed other language models such as Microsoft's Turing NLG's 17 billion parameters. However, this technology and OpenAI have experienced a fair share of criticism. If you recall back to 2019, OpenAI initially felt their model was too "dangerous" since it could easily output fake news or generate phishing schemes. As expected, mainstream news outlets released plenty of fearmongering clickbait without many nuances. See AI deemed 'too dangerous to release' makes it out into the world. As for developers, many just wanted to check it out. Then, in 2020, they made an announcement. They released GPT-2 to the public so developers could experiment and play with the latest in natural language processing technology. In 2020, OpenAI began offering beta applications for access to the GPT-3 API. Providing API access offers an important distinction compared to downloading the entire model, as was the case with GPT-2. Developers can now quickly develop applications and focus on real use cases then call's GPT-3 API when necessary. As expected, plenty of new startups have appeared in the last year or so using GPT-3's technology. Let's focus on AI copywriter, Copy AI.
So what is Copy AI? Copy AI delivers automated copywriting services produced by GPT-3. While more options are available upon creating an account, Copy AI focuses on six different types of copy: social media posts, blog content, website copy, product descriptions for e-commerce, sales copy, and digital ad copy. Obviously, these are all important pieces of content that help generate revenue in a given space. If Copy AI can indeed perform these tasks better than, say a freelance marketer, then they're offering a pretty tantalizing value proposition. Not only would their solution be less expensive, but it'd also eliminate the time and frustration spent communicating with, reviewing, and approving freelancers.
Personally, I run a digital agency and this coding blog with my sister. We consistently need to write copy in all of the areas listed above. So, for this review, I'm going to run through a variety of realistic scenarios where Copy AI could help us. As someone who has also experimented with GPT-2, and felt that the text summarization and text prediction were more flash than actual substance, I'm curious to see how much GPT-3 has improved upon its predecessor.
Copy AI's onboarding experience is pretty smooth and I encourage other entrepreneurs to check it out. Their homepage does a great job at packing all the important information above-the-fold, meaning you really don't need to scroll down to learn more. Upon page load, you instantly know there's a free trial, a visual component to explain how the service works, and a key problem they address: writer's block. However, I'm curious, to what extent are potential users actually interested in solving writer's block versus just speed and accessibility? Regardless, scrolling down you'll notice that they have a strong form of social proof. Instead of a wall of tweets from unknown accounts, they feature quick videos from real businesses and include a backlink to each company website. I'm guessing the users were more than willing to share their experience given the quality backlink, something other indie hackers might want to consider implementing for their own projects.
Next, they incorporate OAuth to include Google and Facebook sign-ins for a seamless experience. You can learn how to do this yourself here. Even if you prefer to use an email address, you don't need to enter a password. Cool, let's move on.
After signing up for the seven-day free trial (no credit card required), I selected "Blog Intros" as the first content to create. For this scenario, I'm testing whether Copy AI can provide blog intros for articles on this website. I'll start with an easy one.

Not too bad. It took about 15 seconds to produce about 10 results and each intro was fairly unique and varied in length. As you can see, there's also a "Make more" button that will add similar results to the bottom of the list. I chose the third sample above and got this:
It actually added specific packages that programmers can install. The "Make more" button definitely seems to provide improved results; however if you click the button on too many prompts too quickly, you will be greeted by a message telling you to slow down. Don't expect to go crazy producing tons of similar prompts in a matter of seconds.
Let's try some others:

This was pretty impressive. There were a few other solid intros as well. You might see one of these in an article soon. I also added a longer, more specific description to see if I could get even better results:

The results were mixed. Some intros did a great job at contextualizing current bootcamps but others made up quotes I could not verify. Of course, the solution is just to "Make more" of the accurate ones.
In this case, I'm looking for ad copy suggestions for a solar provider we work with. If you've ever run ads on Facebook, Google, or Microsoft, you know about keyword planners and the importance of testing a variety of phrases and call-to-actions. This application of Copy' AI's text generation tools could prove more useful than the blog intros. Running solid ad campaigns requires maintenance and new ideas to A/B test. Let's see how well it can perform.
Product/Brand Name: Solar Power

Most of the ad copy was pretty good. Some of the ads incorporated the environmental benefits of going solar while others focused more on potential savings. However, I'm cautious to use any of these results since I don't think that can outperform our copy. For example, we began adding a temporal element to our ads and saw better results: "When Is It Time To Go Solar? | Learn From A Solar Expert | Talk To A Qualified Team". The results above seemingly "fit in" with all the other ads. Maybe this is due to the inputs I provided and I need to do a better job at describing what I want.
Overall, I think the ad copy suggestions help with brainstorming. Users can then refine their copy with a combination of "Making more" or refining an existing suggestion.
CTA/ Hero Text
For this example, we're looking to re-write the CTA/Hero text for our site, thelegalcanary.com. Basically, the site's purpose is to match people with valid claims to law firms who are tackling corresponding lawsuits. After selecting "Landing Page Hero Text", I received the following results:
Product/Brand Name: Legal Canary
Describe Product: Get help filing your legal claim. We'll match you to a law firm to help you get paid for defective products and services
Not really what I wanted. However, after playing around with a few of the other options I got some creative results. Using the "Attention-Interest-Desire-Action" tool with the same prompt, Copy AI produced the following result:
Not only are the phrases coherent, but it nails the whole point of the site. Here are the results from the Short Text Hook tool:
While these are not the correct companies, I like how the copy establishes credibility. Once again, you can see how Copy AI might not provide perfect results instantly but it can point you in the right direction. Now I understand why their CTA on their homepage centers on writer's block instead of replacing freelance copywriters. This is more of a tool than an entire copywriting service. Ultimately, these tools are dependent on user input and in many cases, require a small amount of refinement.
Clubhouse Bio/ Viral Ideas
The last few tools that I checked out were more for fun. Let's start with a Clubhouse bio, hopefully, it's not too pompous (or maybe it should be?).

While I wish the former were true, the latter is much more accurate. The next tool is for viral ideas.

The one about making a rap video and posting it on r/videos is definitely a viral idea that could work for better or worse. While fun, I think the viral and growth idea tools are actually more impressive than some of the other generated results. It's not easy thinking of new marketing/growth ideas and you're unlikely to find a blog post that will actually help you go viral. With the viral ideas above, each suggestion is actually actionable! When I switch to growth ideas, I received some interesting ideas as well:

Copy AI is a product that feels new and built for 2021. The results from Open GPT-3 seem to vastly improve upon its predecessor. You will receive results that actually make sense and can be utilized for your landing pages, ads, and blog intros. There is simply a level of clarity and understanding that was not present in the previous transformer model. However, let's be practical. If you're already writing copy just fine, this probably is not for you. Yes, there are some benefits in the sheer quantity of results Copy AI can produce, but if you're already targeting a specific niche, you probably know exactly how your copy should be written. If you're someone who is not familiar with writing copy, check this product out. Not only will it save you time and provide a variety of results, but you'll likely learn how to write copy from using the software. This can be a teaching tool.
I think that's the important part -- this is a tool. As with any tool, it depends on your knowledge base and how you use it. I don't think I tested nor utilized Copy AI as well as I could. After another week of using the software, I believe I could have unearth better results.
So, will I purchase the product? Honestly, I don't know yet. I don't know how often I would actually use this product on a weekly basis. But, next time I'm having trouble coming up with new ideas, I know where to go.
